The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a children’s book by Eric Carle. Its first copyright was in 1969, proving its popularity and staying power for generations. If you’re familiar with the author, you already know the type of suspense and education he brings to his stories. If you’re not familiar with Eric Carle, The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a great place to start. It’s a story about a caterpillar that keeps eating more and more by the day. Eventually, he ends up with a stomachache. Learning from his lesson, the following day he chooses to eat a green leaf, which not only leads to him feeling better, but also leads to him building a cocoon and turning into a beautiful butterfly.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been one of the most popular children’s books on the market for decades, and there’s a reason for that. It’s because kids love it. The book is full of bright colors, which kids are always attracted to. They can also stick their fingers through the holes, making it interactive and educational at the same time. They will see familiar foods, such as ice cream, oranges, and apples. This will help them associate with these foods in real life. Of course, this book is also very suspenseful. We all want to know what will happen to the caterpillar that continues to eat too much.

This story teaches many things at once. One is not to overindulge. Another is that eating healthy can be beneficial. The circle of life is the primary theme. And the repetition in The Very Hungry Caterpillar helps with word recognition while the pictures help a great deal with visual recognition.

If you’re looking for a book that can educate and entertain, then The Very Hungry Caterpillar should definitely be a part of your child’s library.

The Polar Express

Every adult can remember being a child at Christmas, the excitement of trying to fall asleep Christmas Eve knowing Santa Claus would be arriving that night, ears carefully tuned to the roof for the sound of reindeer hoof beats or Santa’s sleigh bells. These days, children the world over continue to hope of one day meeting Santa as he is making his way across the globe, delivering presents. They dream of getting the opportunity to travel to the North Pole, to see the elves at work, and maybe pet and feed a reindeer.

This dream is the basis for Chris Van Allsburg’s Christmas classic, The Polar Express, where a young boy finds himself spending Christmas Eve on a steam engine headed straight for the North Pole. He and the other children aboard take a journey through wonderful winter towns and magical, mystical forests on their way to see Santa. Once they reach their destination they are witness to a gathering of elves who are all waiting to see Santa Claus off. When the boy is handpicked by Santa himself to be given the first gift of Christmas, he must choose his present carefully. After all, he can have whatever he wants as the first gift of Christmas, but he also knows he probably won’t get another chance like this again.

The Polar Express, which won the Caldecott Medal in 1986 and was turned into a film in 2004 starring Tom Hanks, continues to be a beloved Christmas tale to this day. Kids and adults alike will delight in this unforgettable story of childhood wonder.

The Snowy Day

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats is an award winning book that many teachers and parents alike may actually recognize from their childhood. It was first published in 1962 and is actually credited as being the first children's book to ever utilize color in the illustrations. Many book collectors possess original versions of the story and have made it popular over the years.

However, many of the children that read it are quite unaware of its interesting history. There is no doubt that children of all ages are quite captivated by snow and the thought of a full day of playing outside in it is quite exciting. In "The Snowy Day," a young boy named Peter shares his adventure with readers and it is sure to impress even the most difficult kids. The story effectively describes the excitement that most children experience when they wake up to find snow on the ground.

The illustrations in the book are phenomenal and utilize a series of cutouts, collages, and paintings to project the perfect image. Another very interesting aspect of "The Snowy Day" is that the hero in it, Peter, is a young African American boy. Many schools were eager to ensure that this piece of history was on their bookshelves which is quite amazing considering the time period that it was originally published.

The Snowy Day is a book that many people seek for a lot of different reasons, but the most popular audience is still children who really enjoy reading about the magical wonderland created by snow falling all night while everyone sleeps. The story is most appropriate for school age children, although it is actually also used in many college level art classes because of the impressive artistic components that can be found within the pages of the book.

The Velveteen Rabbit

The Velveteen Rabbit, which is also called How Toys Become Real, is perhaps one of the only children's books that is still being published that parents will most likely recognize. In fact, it has been a longtime favorite of both children and adults and has been used by teachers in a classroom setting for years. The book was first published in 1922 and has remained one of the most popular stories ever since.

The story revolves around a stuffed rabbit that quickly becomes the favorite toy of the little boy in the book. The stuffed rabbit learns that he will become real if his owner truly loves him, and that becomes his goal. After the young child is struck with scarlet fever, all of his toys must be removed and burned and the velveteen rabbit is sent to the burn pile. While at the burn pile, he sheds a tear and the magic fairy turns him into a real rabbit that will spend the rest of his life in the wild.

One of the most interesting aspects of the story is that it has so many lessons that have remained timeless. The book teaches friendship and discourages people from judging others. Many teachers and parents alike love the story and are excited to be able to share it with their children and students. Within the last couple decades, several movies and animated films have been made based on the story. However, most avid fans of "The Velveteen Rabbit" just don't think any of them can compare with the original story.

Although the story is commonly read to younger children, many older kids will enjoy reading it and teachers often utilize the book for writing assignments for students as old as middle school. "The Velveteen Rabbit" is a valuable addition to any book shelf.

Curious George

Curious George is probably the most popular character among most male children, but his antics are enjoyed by little girls as well. All of the Curious George stories revolve around a little monkey, named George, and the Man in the Yellow Hat who has adopted him. It seems to be virtually impossible for Curious George to stay out of trouble and all of his behavior is a direct result of his curiosity. The little monkey is constantly going on trips and experiencing new things in his every day life.

One of the neat things about the Curious George series is that although the little monkey is quite troublesome, his antics are anything but intentional. In fact, many of the incidents are caused by George trying to help someone or complete a job that they have already started. Many teachers and parents appreciate the books for the humor that they provide, but admire the books for the lessons that children can learn without even trying. Many classrooms have as a result purchased the various books available and have been using them for quite a few years. In fact, many teachers and parents can remember reading Curious George when they were actually children.

While most of the Curious George books are intended for children learning to read and slightly younger, "Discovery Day" is somewhat of an interesting twist and is a story designed to help preschool age children learn their colors, shapes, letters, and animals. Instead of a boring book filled with forced learning, this Curious George book makes it fun for kids to identify the different things while following a simple plot to keep them interested. Curious George "Discovery Day" is an excellent choice for parents that are trying to encourage older siblings to read with their younger brothers and sisters.

Clifford

Clifford has been a longtime favorite of many children and readers have watched him grow from a tiny little red puppy that was the runt of the litter to a giant red dog that is taller than a house. All Clifford stories include a valuable lesson that parents or teachers can emphasize and the result is a learning experience that is sure not to disappoint anyone. In contrast with many other children's stories, the morals found within the Clifford stories are very generic and do not delve into too much detail or specific religious views. As a result, they are both appropriate for use in the classroom or at home and they are designed not to offend.

Clifford's owner, Emily Elizabeth, is a caring young girl that is constantly making new friends and doing her best to help anyone along the way. Many of the Clifford stories include the same main characters and the family is placed at the center of the story. Most of the themes revolve around friendship, family, and responsibility. Some of the lessons may be difficult for the youngest children to understand, but they will still be pleased with the books.

While most Clifford stories are designed for older children, "Don't Wake the Puppies" is a counting book targeted to children of preschool age. Many younger children have been exposed to Clifford by older siblings that are already very much enamored with the lovable red dog. The illustrations in this counting book are quite impressive and puppies have been very successful at catching the attention of even the most difficult students or children. The book has a couple dozen pages and has significantly more material than many counting books. "Don't Wake the Puppies" is an excellent choice and is an appropriate story for older and younger siblings to read together.

Three Little Pigs

Walt Disney's Three Little Pigs is a Little Golden Book that has become a classic children's story. This story has been enjoyed by generations of little ones for not only it's exciting story line and characters, but also for it's underlying lesson about how hard work pays off in the end.

The Three Little Pigs is the story of how the three title characters have decided to build their homes. The first pig did not bother to put in the hard work of building a sturdy house, choosing instead to build his house out of straw. The second pig chooses the similar option of building his house out of sticks. The third pig is far more conscientious and chooses the labor-intensive option of making his house with bricks. This house is by far the most durable and withstands a visit from the Big Bad Wolf, who cannot blow the brick house down, as he had done with the previous two homes. The valuable lesson children learn from this tale is that hard work is rewarded and it is necessary to put forth the effort in everything they do.

The Little Golden Book version of this story features vintage Disney artwork from the 1940's on each page. The hardcover book is 24 pages long and is low priced.  With children's book becoming increasingly more expensive, Little Golden Books such as the Three Little Pigs remain an affordable and classic line of books that children can enjoy for years to come.

Love You Forever

“I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, As long as I’m living my baby you’ll be.”….. So begins the endearing introduction of the children’s book, Love You Forever. Written by Robert Munsch, and beautifully illustrated by Sheila McGraw, Love You Forever is a heartwarming story about the love a mother has for her son. This charming, easy to read children’s book, takes the reader on a realistic journey through the stages of a young child’s growth and development from infancy to adulthood. From a precocious two year old, to a devilish nine year old, to a rowdy teenager, the mother consistently expresses her love every single night, when she picks up her sleeping son and rocks him back and forth while singing the opening lullaby.

As the child grew, the mother’s love grew. No amount of distance and no amount of difficulties stifled it. Instead, it increased over time. So ingrained and enduring was this love, that it survived old age, sickness, and the birth of a new generation.
